For sure, it's also possible to stay at the island overnight, so you can experience even more places.
Budget ¥ 2500 ~

Miyajimaguchi Ferry Terminal
9:00 - 9:30(30 minutes)
1 Miyajimaguchi Ferry Terminal

Our trip starts at Miyajimaguchi Ferry Terminal. From there it takes only around 10 minutes to Miyajima with the ferry.

From Hiroshima station you can use the city tram (Hiroden) or JR trains to go to Miyajimaguchi station. From there it's just a short walk to the ferry terminal.

It takes around 10 minutes by ferry to travel from Miyajimaguchi pier to Miyajima island. Two ferry companies operate between Miyajimaguchi and Miyajima island - you can choose between JR ferry and the Miyajima Matsudai Kisen.

For Japan Rail Pass holders the JR ferry is for free.
Otherwise the round trip costs ¥ 360.

Miyajima (Itsukushima)
2 Miyajima (Itsukushima)

Getting of the ferry, you entered Miyajima island, originally known as Itsukushima island. It's well known for the Itsukushima shrine with its floating red torii gate and the deers walking around the small city. You also can find Mount Misen there.

So let's start our trip around the island!! (^_^)/

Detail Information
Itsukushima Shrine
10:00 - 11:00(1 hour)
3 Itsukushima Shrine

Our first stop is Itsukushima Shrine (厳島神社). It is one of the most famous shrines of Japan - mostly known for its red floating torii gate in front of the shrine. You already can see the torii on your way there. If it's not floated you even can walk to it.

After viewing the torii you can get a ticket and enter the shrine. Enjoy the wonderful architecture of this red wooden building.

After visiting Itsukushima shrine you can take a look around the other old buildings. You can buy a combination-ticket with Itsukushima Shrine Treasure Museum.

Miyajima Ropeway
11:00 - 12:00(1 hour)
4 Miyajima Ropeway

Behind Itsukushima shrine you can find a free shuttle bus operating every 20 minutes bringing you to Momijidani ropeway station. For sure, you also can walk upthere and and enjoy Momiji Park (please plan extra time).
For saving time and energy I recommend using ropeway, since you still have to walk a while from the ropeway station Shishiiwa to Mt. Misen Observatory

The ropeway is unique for its two different kinds of gondolas (Momijidani Line and Shishiiwa Line). While driving you can enjoy an amazing view from above.

The one-way trip costs ¥ 1,000, the round trip ¥ 1,800.

Detail Information
Mount Misen
12:00 - 14:30(2 1/2 hours)
5 Mount Misen

Mount Misen is a 535 m high mountain at the small island Itsukushima, better known as Miyajima.

Arriving with the ropeway at Shishiiwa stations you can go to Shishiiwa Observatory within a few minutes.

To the Mt. Misen observatory you have to walk a longer distance up-hill and down-hill. On this way you walk by some special places and can try to expirience the "Misen's Seven wonders." Take the free phamplet with you to find out more about it.

For sure, you also can have a wonderful view from nearly all places up the mountain.

The phamplet says you need around 1 hour for the way to Mt. Misen observatory and back. I recommend planing more time to have a rest inbetween, especially if you are not so fit with hiking.

Five-storied Pagoda at Miyajima
14:30 - 15:30(1 hour)
6 Five-storied Pagoda at Miyajima

Getting back down, you can visit some more places around the city, like Hokokujinja.

I totally recommend taking a look to the 5-storied pagoda - also called Gojūnoto (五重塔) - which was built in 1407 and is the highest building at Miyajima island. It's totally stunning and beautiful to see from every angle with its vermillion-colored tower.

Omotesando Shopping Avenue, Miyajima
15:30 - 17:00(1 1/2 hours)
7 Omotesando Shopping Avenue, Miyajima

To end up your 1-day-trip to Miyajima, take a look around Omotesando Shopping Avenue. This Edo-style street is filled with a lot of souvenir shops and restaurants. Take the chances to get some special souvenirs and try some of the unique traditional sweets of Miyajima called Momiji Manjyu which are shaped like maple leaves.

There are other interesting streets around there, too. Take a rest at one of the restaurants and relaxe from the exhausting journey.

Or enjoy your time playing with some off the wild deers walking around the city, before going back to the ferry pier and drive back to Miyajimaguchi Ferry terminal.
