Matsumoto's namesake castle is the oldest existing castle in Japan and is recognized as a National Treasure. The contrasting black and white plaster of the exterior stands out boldly against the magnificent backdrop of the Japanese Alps. Built with many unique architectural elements, Matsumoto Castle also features a moon viewing pavilion, indicative of the lifestyle of the feudal lords. The grounds of the castle come alive in color in the spring with cherry blossoms.

KANAGUYA, is an historical 250+ yr old ryokan sits on a narrow street dating back to the Edo period, in Shibu Onsen, Nagano.
There are a total of 9 baths in the Inn; 5 which are private (you can enter and lock the door and have it all to yourself) and 4 that are communal baths: one each for men and women-inside and 2 outdoor communal baths (“rotenburo”). Kanaguya’s hot spring water comes from 4 different sources of hot springs in the mountains surrounding the inn.
Outside along the narrow street are 9 more communal hot spring baths to explore. Just don your yukata (summer kimono) and geta (Japanese sandals), take the key from your room and the little towel (tenegui) you are provided from Kanaguya for the baths, and you’ll be ready to explore the historical surroundings and take in the wonderfully charming atmosphere of Shibu Onsen!

The Jigokudani Yaen-koen (altitude 850 meters) is located in the Valley of Yokoyu River sourced from Shiga-Kogen of the Joshinetsu-Kogen National Park in northern part of Nagano prefecture. Because of the very steep cliffs and the steam coming off the springs in everywhere, ancient people called this valley ‘Jigokudani (Hell valley)’. Also it is buried in snow almost one third of the year. Even that kind of severe environment here is a paradise on earth for monkeys to live in. The troops of wild Japanese macaque (they are popularly known as snow monkeys) inhabit here naturally through the ages.
Since the establishment of Jigokudani Yaen-koen in 1964, it has been a worldwide popular place for watching the bathing monkeys in a hot spring and for ecological observation of researchers or photographers, and some of them who visited here have accomplished certain results in the area.

    Mishakaike Pond, Okutateshina in Nagano.
The Pond which is famous for the painting by Okutateshina is one of the perfect spots for the photographers especially in foliage season.

We can enjoy not only highland walking, hillwalking and skiing but also the hot springs. That’s why there are so many tourists all year. Nevertheless, it fascinates me because this tolerant resort still keeps quiet and calm.

There is something formal at-home life atmosphere in the district. I wonder if that’s because Tateshina is also the elegant cottage areas.

“Mishaka” means to hunt deer devoted to the Holy Spirit.
