Cat Island Aoshima
Sightseeing
Area Japan  >  Ehime  >  Ozu
Description It's said that on the island called Aoshima (青島) at Ehime prefecture, only around 15 elderly people are living together with over 100 cats. Lately it became one of the famous cat islands of Japan through media.

The cats are living in abandoned houses around the small fishing village and are fed by the few residents and tourists. Sometimes you can catch up cats eating fish.

However, there is not much more than cats on this island. You only can find the old fishing village, two shrines and a lot of nature. There are no shops, no konbini, no restaurant nor a hotel. Only a small public house where you can sit down to rest and go to toilet. So you should bring everything like food and drink with you.

There are only two ferries a day going to the small island form Iyonagahama port. The round trip costs ¥ 1360.

It's definitely a must-visit-spot for all cat lovers, because you can spent a great time there surrounded by over 100 cats, even pretty small kittens!
